Full Description
Choose Primo and experience the best in kamado style charcoal cooking. The Primo Oval XL Charcoal Smoker Grill is an extra large sized grill and one of the biggest ceramic cookers on the market. The distinct shape of the Oval XL allows you to cook using direct or indirect heat, expanding your grilling options unlike any other kamado-style grill. This grill features easy to clean and reversible porcelain-coated cooking grates, as well as one of the highest sitting lids which is great for cooking whole chickens or turkeys. This kamado style grill is made in the USA, unlike its competition, and constructed with premium grade Primo SuperCeramics and coated with a protective, lead-free, and scratch-resistant porcelain glaze. The patented Primo Oval XL efficiently retains and evenly distributes heat across the 400 square inches of cooking surface, perfect for maintaining a consistent temperature. Smoke meat at temperatures as low as 180 degrees Fahrenheit, or turn up the heat to more than 500 degrees Fahrenheit for searing and grilling. Use the cast iron chimney cap, stainless steel lower vent door, and easy to read thermometer for monitoring and keeping a precise temperature. The easy lift-and-lock hinge system keeps the lid raised in place, and the soft-close felt gasket protects the ceramic while opening and closing the lid using the cool touch handle. Heat-safe ceramic feet are available to stabilize your Primo and are needed when the grill sits on a combustible surface (sold separately). The variety of accessories available, along with the unique oval shape, allows flexibility in cooking a never ending list of delicious meals. Choosing a Primo kamado style grill is a decision you will never regret.

Warranty
Primo warrants all ceramic parts for twenty years, five years for all metal parts (excluding cast-iron parts), one year for all cast-iron parts, and 30 days on the thermometers and felt gaskets. The warranty is limited to the repair or replacement of any parts which, under normal use, Primo determines, after reasonable examination, to be defective.

  • Q.

Why is the Primo ceramic warranty only 20 years when others such as Kamado Joe are lifetime warranties?

    • A.

While 20 years versus a lifetime seems significantly short, it is a warranty on the ceramic. When a Kamado survives for more than 20 years without the ceramic showing a defect, it is very unlikely there will be a defect later. Reply

  • Q.

How much charcoal does this grill hold?

    • A.

To achieve maximum temperature, fill your fire bowl approximately one inch above the air holes that are located in the bottom third of the fire bowl. A common error is adding too much charcoal. Lump size will affect how long the charcoal burns, so you’ll need to experiment and become familiar with the amount of charcoal needed if you’re grilling for one hour versus smoking for eight hours. Each size grill will need a bit different charcoal amounts depending on how you are cooking and for how long. Reply

What is the difference between the Primo and the Big Green Egg?

    • A.

The biggest difference in the Primo and the Big Green Egg is the AWESOME oval shape that Primo offers. It's something that no other Kamado grill has and it's perfect for a variety of cooking style. This oval design allows Primo, with the use of a firebox divider, to offer true dual zone cooking. It also allows you to cook 2 different foods at different temperatures. The oval shape also allows you cook those longer racks of ribs and big briskets. Normally you would need to cut these items to fit the round shape, but not in the Primo oval. Primo is also proudly made in the USA, and offers a wider variety of cooking accessories. Reply

  • Q.

Should I choose the oval or round size?

    • A.

The Primo will be a great choice no matter what size but there are a few things to consider when deciding on which size would be best for your needs. What are you grilling most often and for how many? If you have a small family most often and you are grilling things like burgers, chicken or even pizza then Large Round would be perfect for you. If you are cooking for lager groups like 6 or more or you are more prone to foods like ribs and brisket (the ones that take up more space) you would be a perfect candidate for the Oval grills. Determining what size will be solely based on how much you cook at once. 4-6 I would recommend the Oval Large. Any entertaining going on? Larger groups of 6 or more, you will likely be happier with the Oval XL. Just you and your spouse? The Oval Jr is a great 2 person grill for you and will usually be more than enough. Reply

  • Q.

How do you use the heat deflector?

    • A.

Heat deflectors are used for indirect or "low and slow" cooking. The idea is to create a convection type of cooking. The heated air will cook your food, as opposed to flame directly cooking your food, from the bottom up. The Heat Deflector is positioned below your cooking grid, causing the heat to rise and to roll through the entire smoker. You can do wet or dry indirect cooking. This basic setup will provide you with dry indirect cooking. For any recipe you have that needs "wet" indirect cooking, you will place a pan of liquid directly on top of the deflector plate and below the cooking grid. We have several videos on how to use the heat deflector to cook may different recipes. Primo ovaal XL grill Great Grill

I got the Primo oval xl about 2 months ago I have grilled chickens, Turkeys, Boston Butts on it as of date. I have used a weber for about 40 years and you cane tell the difference the meat is more moist and has a lot more favor. BBq guys are great they will price match any deal you find on line. Shipping is simple the grill was on pallet the truck driver unload it and placed it where I wanted it. I had built a table but left one side off so I could put the grill in. We took the lids off which help reduce the weight and had no problem putting it in the table and then finishing the table. I did a lot of research on grills and talked to several folks I think this is the best grill on the market

Gave away the big gas grill!

The versatility and quality of the Primo is superb! We use this 3-4 times per week. With the divider, offset cooking is a breeze. Go on the Primo forum for recipes & user tips from other aficionados. This is an investment that pays big dividends in excellent tasting food.

Primo Oval XL is Xlent!!!

I have grilled and smoked all my life. My Dad bought his first Weber in 1972. I love to smoke and have competed in many contests. I bought my Primo XL 6 years ago. It is the most efficient and Versitile unit available. Buy it! It does it all. I cook the entire meal on it without a sweat.

Best size and most versatile ceramic cooker, period!

I definitely did my research ahead of time and this is the cooker I choose. My only complaint is I wish I would have purchased it sooner. If you love to BBQ and grill this is a must. First you need to be sold on a Komodo type cooker i.e., ceramic. From there, you have the choice of about five brands. Ceramic in general: Pros - Well insulated so food does not dry out - Keeps flavor in and you can taste a difference - Extremely efficient with charcoal - Can grill at a seating 700 degree or smoke at 150 degrees and everything in-between - Keeps temperature even an consistent - Due to large ash space and fuel conserving efficiency, you can reuse old coal for next cook. Just light it and let it warm up while you prepare your food; almost as simple as gas. Cons: - Heavy - Pricey - You will become addicted to outdoor cooking! Unique differences offered by the Promo Oval. 1. Much larger cooking area, the Green Egg, as well as other traditional shapes which are only 18 and are very limited. Have you ever cooked on an 18 Weber Kettle its just inconveniently too small. 2. Extra extended cooking racks for even more space are available. 3. Iron divider that fits in the fire box for true indirect cooking; great for steaks or anything in that matter where, you want indirect and direct cooking at the same time 4. A great user Forum site full of supporting users, as well the people at Primo are super helpful and knowledgeable. Lastly, the great thing about this cooker is the ease of use; Ive cooked a brisket for 18 hours and never needed to add charcoal or even lift the lid during the entire cook! I truly believe Primo is the Cadillac of the ceramic cookers. Another nice feature is if you add lots of coal at first, due to its efficiency you can just re-light whats left over from the last cook and a few more times depending on what your cooking; its nice to just to go out and light it without cleaning ashes an pulling out the bag each time! I have had mine for close to five years now and still love it I now cook outdoors 3 to 4 days a week now:)
